In recent years, bibliometric studies on mathematics education have allowed us to learn more about the scientific production in this field. To continue this line of study, in this research we have focused on the doctoral theses published on mathematics education and, in particular, on the role of women in the production, direction and evaluation of doctoral theses in this field, focusing on Andalusian universities. For this purpose, a bibliometric study has been carried out using the Teseo database. The results show a decrease in Andalusian doctoral production in this field in recent years and how, although the number of women who have completed doctoral theses in this field is greater than that of men, in the case of the direction of them, the number of male directors is greater than men directors © 2022, Alexander Maz Machado et al; published by UIKTEN. Women researchers have been shown to be underrepresented in science, especially among the most productive scholars. This is especially relevant in the social sciences and humanities fields, where gender parity is closer, but disparities among top scholars are still pronounced. The gender gap in the field of communication has been explored from several approaches, but studies focusing on gender differences in representation, citations, and h-index are rather scarce. Drawing upon data retrieved from SciVal, we conducted a comparative study of the top 500 and top 100 most productive scholars (N = 5000) for each of the ten most productive countries in communication research in the 2019-2022 period: the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Spain, Germany, India, Australia, Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands. The results indicate a consistent underrepresentation of women, particularly among the top 500, across countries. Despite women being cited more frequently than men in some countries over shorter time frames, a gender bias persists favoring men, particularly when considering the h-index. All in all, our study shows that, despite hints of gender equality in citation patterns, the gender gap still constitutes a structural part of the field of communication when addressing gender representation in research productivity and long-term dynamics of research impact.

Objectives: To determine the percentage of female authors in original articles published during 2 periods, in the journal of ATENCIÓN PRIMARIA (Primary Care), and to examine the differences between the categories of authorship (first, last author, and co-author) between both periods. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Feminine scientific production published during the periods 2007-2008 and 2017-2018. Participants: The study was focused on original articles. Main measurements: The following variables were collected in an ad hoc form: gender based on the name of the author, total number of women and men appearing as authors, and order of authorship. Absolute and relative authorship frequencies were calculated, and the χ2 test was used to examine the evolution of the percentages by type of authorship and gender. Results: A total of 108 articles were analysed in 2007-2008, and 100 in 2017-2018. No statistically significant differences were observed between the mean numbers of women authors within and between periods. In 2007-2008 a total of 548 female authors were identified and 540 in 2017-2018, the percentage of female authors was 48.7% and 54.4%, respectively. Only an increase in the percentage of first authors was observed between periods. Conclusions: Practically one out of every 2 authors of original articles published in the journal ATENCIÓN PRIMARIA was female. There was also a significant increase in the percentage of female first authors between the 2 periods. Nevertheless, and despite the greater number of health workers, the number of latest female authors remain unchanged, which points to the persistence of female under-representation. © 2019 The Authors

Scientific productivity and evolution of doctoral theses in Higher Education: analysis by gender and topics Open PDF
    (2020)
    Ferreira, C.
The aim of this study is to analyze the scientific productivity of Higher Education, deepening in the doctoral theses parameters in this field, taking into account bibliometric variables and identifying the topics of the doctoral theses and trends in Higher Education in the attainment of the PhD degree. This study is descriptive longitudinal, retrospective and bibliometric of scientific production in doctoral theses on Higher Education defended in Spanish universities and registered in the TESEO database from its first publication, 1976, to the academic year 2018-2019. The analyzed variables in the study show he differences between men and women in the academic field, especially when holding the position of president of the doctoral thesis court. The results reflect that this field has undergone a process of consolidation with a linear and constant growth in the production of doctoral theses. © 2020 CSIC. All Rights Reserved. © 2020. All Rights Reserved.

Diversity of backgrounds and ideas: The case of research evaluation in economics Open PDF

This paper contributes to the literature on the effect of research evaluation in terms of preserving and reproducing diversity. Through a large-scale natural experiment encompassing two entire cohorts of Italian economists, we document how candidates for academic positions, especially top-tier positions, in economics are pushed to increasingly conform to a standardised research profile. We find evidence of gender bias in research evaluation and observe substantial variability in the chances of qualifying for an academic position, depending on candidates’ main fields, topics and methods of research. Our results also indicate that economists working on less popular research fields and/or with heterodox methods are less likely to qualify for top-tier academic positions, independently of their bibliometric indicators.

Male presence in gender research networks in the communication field in Spain

    Guarinos, V.
The purpose of this paper is to learn about the scientific productivity and collaboration of authors who have published papers on gender in Spanish communication journals by paying special attention to the role played by men. The citation network was analysed in order to identify the researchers network and the participation of men therein. The hypothesis put forward is that men have a secondary role in scientific communities that research gender in the communication field. Methodologies from the analysis of social networks were applied. The information extracted was analysed using Ucinet software. It was confirmed that men have a marginal role in the network and that women tend to cite other women in their publications. © 2017, Hipatia Press. All rights reserved.

The article presents an analysis of the scholarly output of female professors in the field of Health Science in the Autonomous Region of Valencia from 2003 to 2007, through bibliometric techniques and the application of a gender variable. The work attempted to identify how many women became large producers of scholarly articles compared to those who did not reach the same levels of productivity and impact. A total of 3,739 articles were retrieved during this period and the gender of all authors with more than 2 articles was identified. Of these authors 2,774 (60.41 %) were male and 1,818 (39.59 %) were female. Focusing solely on large producers, the percentage of women publishing more than 10 papers was reduced to 26.72 %. As regards to scientific collaboration, it is significant to note that women are included in all clusters of at least 10 authors and in some cases their presence is comparable with that of men. Although women's participation is lower than men's in all areas of knowledge, it is noteworthy that in Health Sciences the difference is not as great as in other technical areas. Women's contribution to the scientific field is increasing, suggesting the possibility of a significant improvement in gender parity in the coming years.
