The objective of this work is to assess gender distribution differences in authorship of papers in the field of vertebrate paleontology published in the Argentine journal Ameghiniana from 1957 to 2011. The bibliometric method was used to analyze gender distribution and evolution of the signing authors, their productivity, geographical origin, authorship composition (i.e., author and co-author), order of authors, taxon and citation levels. Results show predominance of men in number of signatures, mean annual productivity rates and average citation levels. No significant differences were found between gender for the taxa studied or in the order of the signatures. Significant differences were observed in the geographical origin of the authors. In view of the authorship gender distribution of papers published in Ameghiniana, we conclude that men continue to lead in the discipline of vertebrate palaeontology. The increase of women authors, the levelling of productivity over the last decade and the increase co-authorships including women, however, are clear signs of a shifting trend.

Despite important advances made in recent decades, women are still underrepresented in science (less than 30% of authorships). This study presents a bibliometric analysis of all the Psychology articles published in 2009 included in the Web of Science database (Thomson Reuters) in order to examine the contribution of women in contemporary Psychology, their pattern of research collaboration, the scientific content and the scientific impact from a gender perspective. From a total of 90,067 authorships, gender could be identified in 74,413 (82.6%) of them, being 40,782 (54.8%) male authorships and 33,631 (45.2%) female authorships. These data corresponded to 24,477 (49.9%) individual men and 24,553 (50.1%) women, respectively. Therefore, Psychology presents gender parity in the number of authors, and a gender asymmetry in the number of authorships that it is much lower than in science in general and other specific scientific fields. In relative terms, women tend to be concentrated in the first position of the authorship by-line and much less in the last (senior) position. This double pattern suggests that age probably plays a role in (partly) explaining the slight gender disparity of authorships. © 2017 International Union of Psychological Science

Neuroscience or Neural Science is a very active and interdisciplinary field that seeks to understand the brain and the nervous system. In spite of important advances made in recent decades, women are still underrepresented in neuroscience research output as a consequence of gender inequality in science overall. This study carries out a scientometric analysis of the 30 neuroscience journals (2009–2010) with the highest impact in the Web of Science database (Thomson Reuters) in order to quantitatively examine the current contribution of women in neuroscientific production, their pattern of research collaboration, scientific content, and the analysis of scientific impact from a gender perspective. From a total of 66,937 authorships, gender could be identified in 53,351 (79.7%) of them. Results revealed that 67.1% of the authorships corresponded to men and 32.9% to women. In relative terms, women tend to be concentrated in the first position of the authorship by-line (which could be a reflection of new female incorporations into neuroscience research publishing their first studies), and much less in the last (senior) position. This double pattern suggests that age probably plays a role in (partly) explaining gender asymmetry, both in science in general and in neuroscience in particular. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

This article aims to map the activities developed by gender research groups in the administration field and to understand the relationships between them. Gender identity is seen as an important social category for understanding power relations and human interactions in organizations. To understand these relations, the methodological approach includes bibliometric and sociometric studies of the production of gender research group leaders, whose work lines or research impacts and actions presented in description of the group are related to gender, supported by descriptive statistics in order to facilitate data viewing. A total of 32 groups were found, and most of them are recent (half of them having less than 5 years of formalization) that have, altogether, 42 leaders that produced, as authors or co-authors, 88 articles on gender, between January 1995 and January 2014, with a concentration in A2 and B3 scientific journals. The sociometric study reveals a low density network of co-authorship, without a centralizing actor, featuring a small number of co-authoring relationships and a limited number of authors who have publications on gender. This information indicates that the issue is not researched by these authors or the gender works and projects are not meant for scientific production. It also indicates the importance of postgraduate mentoring, to spread the subject in different universities and to create and mantain relations of co-authorship between researchers who were at any given time, mentors and mentees. The relevance of the results is in the initial understanding of the scientific field, from the research groups, which constitute a major element to postgraduate programs and scientific production. As limitations, the partial analysis of the groups, only considering the production of group leaders, and the possibility of lagged data in the Groups Directory may undermine the analysis. An in-depth study of scientific literature analyzed by sociometrics, the historical restoration of the groups constitution, and their relationships with research and extension projects funded by agencies are shown as perspectives of future investigation. © 2014 Mackenzie Presbyterian University. Thanks to policies put in place in the 1930s, women's experiences in higher education increased their professional participation in the academic and scientific worlds. Largely neglected in Brazilian historiography of the sciences, analysis of this phenomenon introduces a new perspective on the meaning of institutionalization and professionalization of scientific activities, a process in which women have played an authentic role. We explore their presence by analyzing the scientific production published in four journals between 1939 and 1969. Gender differences are detected according to the standard of the publication.

The increasing participation of women in scientific and technological careers has been the focus of several studies that seek to outline their academic trajectory. Studying a country’s scientific information is relevant to understanding the evolution of science and broadening perspectives on the current scenario. Thus, the study aimed to analyze the participation of all female PhD students who have curricula registered in the Lattes Platform and whose registered gender is female. The data collection came from the Lattes Platform which contains curriculum information available in open access. Curriculum records were collected at the beginning of March 2019, totaling over 6,126,000 curricula. From this set, and still using the framework, 307,780 curricula of individuals with maximum completed doctorate degrees were selected. Finally, the respective curricula were selected from the group of doctors whose registered gender is female, totaling 149,850 records used for analysis at the end. The data of the PhDs were grouped regarding academic background, publications, productions, orientations, major areas of activity and it was possible to analyze the evolution of scientific and technological production of the set in a temporal way. Studying the various aspects of gender difference in general and particularly in science and technology, as well as being relevant, can be a source of inspiration for government policies and programs that seek to promote change, encourage and value women’s participation in science. © 2019, Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology. Objective: To characterise and determine factors associated with the first authorship and author for correspondence of women who published in Peruvian journals indexed in SciELO between 2010 and 2015. Methodology: Cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of secondary data. All the scientific publications had at least one female author, were evaluated in the 9 Peruvian journals indexed to the SciELO database between 2010 and 2015. The characteristics of the article, authorship and filiation were evaluated. Descriptive and analytical statistics were obtained. Results: Of the 795 scientific publications that had at least one female author, 41% (324) and 35% (253) had a woman as the first author or corresponding author, respectively. The journal that had publications with the largest female participation was the National Institute of Health (153). As regards the year of publication, the percentages of women as the first (R2 = 0) or corresponding author (R2 < .01) did not vary. When performing the bivariate analysis, there was a lower frequency of first authors reporting cases (PR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.27-0.78), and short originals (PR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.24-0.90). First authors were more frequent (RP: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.11-2.30) in the hereditary medical journal, and the stomatology journal had a higher frequency of female first authors (RP: 2.09; 95% CI: 1.31-3.35) and corresponding authors (RP: 2.15; 95% CI: 1.30-3.56). Conclusion: The data and leadership of women in Peruvian scientific publications is still a minority and is stagnant in time. For this reason, collaboration and training networks must be created that are more inclusive with women, in order to support and help sustain its growth. © 2018

This study aims to identify possible gender inequalities in the scholarly output of researchers in the field of psychology in Spain. A sample of 522 papers and reviews published in 2007 was extracted from the Thomson ISI Web of Science. The presence of women, the collaboration pattern and the impact of these scientific publications were analyzed. The results show that the average number of female researchers per paper was 0. 42 (SD 0. 33) and that 42. 3 % of the papers had a female researcher as the first author. Moreover, the proportion of female authors of a paper was statistically significantly higher when the first author was female. Studies carried out in cooperation with other Spanish or international institutions had fewer female authors than studies conducted at a single center. The impact of the papers, measured by the journal impact factor and the number of citations, was independent of the authors' gender or the proportion of female authors. In summary, the study highlights a gender imbalance in Spanish scientific output in Psychology, and a higher proportion of male researchers in international networks. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.
