Item type:Publication, A Look at Doctoral Theses in Mathematics Education at Andalusian Universities (2010-2020) from a Gender Perspective(2022) ;Maz-Machado, A. ;Gutiérrez-Rubio, D. ;Madrid, M.J.Pedrosa-Jesús, C.In recent years, bibliometric studies on mathematics education have allowed us to learn more about the scientific production in this field. To continue this line of study, in this research we have focused on the doctoral theses published on mathematics education and, in particular, on the role of women in the production, direction and evaluation of doctoral theses in this field, focusing on Andalusian universities. For this purpose, a bibliometric study has been carried out using the Teseo database. The results show a decrease in Andalusian doctoral production in this field in recent years and how, although the number of women who have completed doctoral theses in this field is greater than that of men, in the case of the direction of them, the number of male directors is greater than men directors © 2022, Alexander Maz Machado et al; published by UIKTEN. The analyses revealed significant differences in the ratio of male (76%) and female (24%) lecturing and research staff. This unequal ratio conducted to women underrepresentation in other actions such as coordination of international projects, decision-making designations, patenting and software licensing, collaboration with companies, and PhD supervision. PhD enrolment and PhD defence data, disaggregated by gender and by technological area, were also analysed as they are the starting point of the academic career, and showed a widespread male prevalence over women (ca. 70% men vs. 30% women). The aim of this paper is to present actual, accurate, objective, and gender-segregated information extracted from UPM databases, to carry out a qualitative study drawing on an opinion survey and a “gap” analysis, and to undertake a critical examination of the historic, political, sociocultural and personal factors affecting gender inequalities in academia. Policy recommendations to improve the situation of women and to achieve gender balance in the disciplines of engineering and architecture are also provided. © 2019, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.Item type:Publication, Predicting early career productivity of PhD economists: Does advisor-match matter? Open PDF(2020) ;García-Suaza, Andrés ;Otero, JesúsWinkelmann, RainerWe assess the role played by department rank and advisor-match on the early stage productivity of recent PhDs in economics using a tailor-made data set based on RePEc. After allowing for the potential influence of other factors, including gender and field of specialisation, we find as expected that both advisory quality and rank of the graduation institution are positively related to the academic productivity of graduates. However, in top institutions, students working with the most productive academics do not outperform others unless they co-author with their advisor. For students in non-top institutions, being advised by the best academics is always associated with a higher research output. Possible explanations for this difference are pointed out, including selection and differences in advising styles.Item type:Publication, Scientific productivity and evolution of doctoral theses in Higher Education: analysis by gender and topics Open PDF(2020)Ferreira, C.The aim of this study is to analyze the scientific productivity of Higher Education, deepening in the doctoral theses parameters in this field, taking into account bibliometric variables and identifying the topics of the doctoral theses and trends in Higher Education in the attainment of the PhD degree. This study is descriptive longitudinal, retrospective and bibliometric of scientific production in doctoral theses on Higher Education defended in Spanish universities and registered in the TESEO database from its first publication, 1976, to the academic year 2018-2019. The analyzed variables in the study show he differences between men and women in the academic field, especially when holding the position of president of the doctoral thesis court. The results reflect that this field has undergone a process of consolidation with a linear and constant growth in the production of doctoral theses. © 2020 CSIC. All Rights Reserved. © 2020. Gender and evaluation criteria for tenure and promotion Open PDF(2021) ;Cruz-Castro, L.Sanz-Menendez, L.Criteria for assessing candidates are essential elements for the functioning of evaluation practices in academia. This article addresses a relevant issue of academia: the preference for evaluation criteria for tenure and promotion, as reported by female and male academics employed at Spanish universities. We use survey data from 4,460 faculty members, testing whether there are differences in the evaluation criteria that women and men prefer and exploring the factors that account for such preferences. Our focus is on bibliometric evaluation criteria. We propose an analytical model that considers the influence of career and quality factors, values about universalism and the mission of universities, and beliefs about meritocracy in the context of the academic evaluation system. We use a binary logistic model to explain the preference for bibliometric criteria and develop the comparisons by gender using predicted probabilities and marginal effects for estimating the difference. We find that female academics do not have the same preferences as men and report lower preferences for bibliometrics. However, women at the highest research quality levels have similar probabilities than males to prefer bibliometric criteria for evaluation. © 2021
