    Academic medicine’s glass ceiling: Author’s gender in top three medical research journals impacts probability of future publication success Open PDF

    Introduction In December 2017, Lancet called for gender inequality investigations. Holding other factors constant, trends over time for significant author (i.e., first, second, last or any of these authors) publications were examined for the three highest-impact medical research journals (i.e., New England Journal of Medicine [NEJM], Journal of the American Medical Association [JAMA], and Lancet). Materials and methods Using randomly sampled 2002-2019 MEDLINE original publications (n = 1,080; 20/year/journal), significant author-based and publication-based characteristics were extracted. Gender assignment used internet-based biographies, pronouns, first names, and photographs. Adjusting for author-specific characteristics and multiple publications per author, generalized estimating equations tested for first, second, and last significant author gender disparities. Results Compared to 37.23% of 2002 – 2019 U.S. medical school full-time faculty that were women, women’s first author publication rates (26.82% overall, 15.83% NEJM, 29.38% Lancet, and 35.39% JAMA; all p < 0.0001) were lower. No improvements over time occurred in women first authorship rates. Women first authors had lower Web of Science citation counts and coauthors/collaborating author counts, less frequently held M.D. or multiple doctoral-level degrees, less commonly published clinical trials or cardiovascular-related projects, but more commonly were North American-based and studied North American-based patients (all p < 0.05). Women second and last authors were similarly underrepresented. Compared to men, women first authors had lower multiple publication rates in these top journals (p < 0.001). Same gender first/last authors resulted in higher multiple publication rates within these top three journals (p < 0.001). Discussion Since 2002, this authorship “gender disparity chasm” has been tolerated across all these top medical research journals. Despite Lancet’s 2017 call to arms, furthermore, the author-based gender disparities have not changed for these top medical research journals - even in recent times. Co-author gender alignment may reduce future gender inequities, but this promising strategy requires further investigation. © 2022 Krstacic et al.     Gender Diversity in the University System: The impact on Performance

    This paper aims to understand whether the organizations characterized by the culture of diversity and inclusion are organizations that promote the creation of value. Starting from the hypothesis that gender capital, considered as gender diversity within a business reality embodying equity levels of representativeness of men and women, facilitates the transfer of interpersonal skills, relationships with stakeholders and company culture, our analysis aim to assess the impact of diversity in the universities context. In recent years, the Italian Academic sector has been characterized by a phase of strong changes that have had a material impact on how to work with all of the parties involved in the Universities' management. The incentive to review the Universities' organization arose from the need of improving the productivity, towards greater competition at a national level and taking in consideration foreign interlocutors, highlighting the attention to cultural heritage and innovation in the country. In order to control the performance, the Italian Ministry of Education, of University and Research (MIUR) has introduced methods for evaluating universities for the distribution of resources. In particular, this research conducted on Italian university system aims at investigating how gender diversity affects the achievement of positive results during the periodic valuation of the quality of the research (VQR) made by the MIUR. In this context, to assess the gender capital impact on Universities' outputs, we conduct an empirical analysis of VQR results related to the period between 2011 and 2014 and the gender diversity within a specific scientific disciplinary sector. This quantitative methodology allows us to understand if the culture of diversity is able to generate greater value within organizations. In particular, if women's skills can make a real difference to foster the competitive advantage of an organization. Moreover, this study contributes expanding the literature on gender studies and it offers a new perspective applied to the concept of gender capital. The outcomes of the application are related to a better understanding of the need to fill the cultural and social gaps that do not allow women to achieve the same opportunity of career and wage expectation of men.

    Gender Representation on Journal Editorial Boards in the Mathematical Sciences Open PDF

    We study gender representation on the editorial boards of 435 journals in the mathematical sciences. Women are known to comprise approximately 15% of tenure-stream faculty positions in doctoral-granting mathematical sciences departments in the United States. Compared to this group, we find that 8.9% of the 13067 editorships in our study are held by women. We describe group variations within the editorships by identifying specific journals, subfields, publishers, and countries that significantly exceed or fall short of this average. To enable our study, we develop a semi-automated method for inferring gender that has an estimated accuracy of 97.5%. Our findings provide the first measure of gender distribution on editorial boards in the mathematical sciences, offer insights that suggest future studies in the mathematical sciences, and introduce new methods that enable large-scale studies of gender distribution in other fields.
