Item type:Publication, Gender, coauthorship and impact: publications of Peruvian biology researchers (1994-2017) Open PDF(2021) ;Málaga-Saboga, L.Sagasti, F.This study explores the role of gender in the networks of co-authorship publications, the impact of articles written by two or more authors, and the influence of high-impact articles on the academic careers. We analyze Peruvian biology researchers with publications in Web of Science Core Collection and SciELO Citation Index, as well as the curricula of the authors of greatest impact publications. A significant imbalance has been found in the number of male and female researchers as well as a significant disproportion of the number of documents published. The co-authorship network formation is not affected by gender, but women have high betweenness levels less frequently, which probably affects their effect on information flow. Finally having published a high impact research is related to promotion for junior researchers, both men and women. © 2021 CSIC. We merged a national registry of 99,935 scientists (with full administrative and biographical data) with the Scopus publication database, using probabilistic and deterministic record linkage. Our unique biographical, administrative, publication, and citation database ("The Polish Science Observatory") included all professors with at least a doctoral degree employed in 85 research-involved universities. We determined what we term an "individual publication portfolio" for every professor, and we examined the respective impacts of biological age, academic position, academic discipline, average journal prestige, and type of institution on the same-sex collaboration ratio. The gender homophily principle (publishing predominantly with scientists of the same sex) was found to apply to male scientists - but not to females. The majority of male scientists collaborate solely with males; most female scientists, in contrast, do not collaborate with females at all. Across all age groups studied, all-female collaboration is marginal, while all-male collaboration is pervasive. Gender homophily in research-intensive institutions proved stronger for males than for females. Finally, we used a multi-dimensional fractional logit regression model to estimate the impact of gender and other individual-level and institutional-level independent variables on gender homophily in research collaboration. © 2021 EDP Sciences. An as yet unanswered question is whether in research publication gender bias is equally distributed over scientific disciplines and fields or if that bias reflects a closer relation to the subject matter. We expected less gender bias with respect to subject matter, and so analysed 14 journals of gender studies using several methods and indicators. The results confirm our expectation: the very high position of women in co-operation is striking; female scientists are relatively overrepresented as first authors in articles. Collaboration behaviour in gender studies differs from that of authors in PNAS. The pattern of gender studies reflects associations between authors of different productivity, or "masters" and "apprentices" but the PNAS pattern reflects associations between authors of roughly the same productivity, or "peers". It would be interesting to extend the analysis of these three-dimensional collaboration patterns further, to see whether a similar characterization holds, what it might imply about the patterns of authorship in different areas, what those patterns might imply about the role of collaboration, and whether there are differences between females and males in collaboration patterns. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.Item type:Publication, Using Bibliometric Analysis to Measure and Understand the Gender Gap in Published Computing Books: Gender Gap in Computer Science Open PDF(2021) ;Kadriu, A. ;Sahatqija, K.Abazi-Bexheti, L.The purpose of the research presented in this paper is the investigation of the gender gap in published computing books. The book titles from the DBLP computer science bibliography were the basis for this investigation. The conducted research involves co-authorship network exploration using social network analysis methods, as well as content learning by keyword extraction and ranking from book titles. The findings show that female authors tend to publish fewer books in computing than their male colleagues, and there is a huge gap of women regarding the collaboration. There are just two women names within the 50 author names with the highest social network top metrics, indicating collaboration. Regarding the extracted keywords, though there are differences, results do not show some huge divergences when it comes to the used language for computing titles. To better understand the nature of gender inequality in Australian science, all gendered Australian first authored articles published between 2010 and 2020 and indexed in the Dimensions database were analysed. Field of Research (FoR) was used as the subject classification of articles and Field Citation Ratio (FCR) was used for citation comparison. Overall, the ratio of female to male first authored articles increased over the years, and this was true for all FoRs except for information and computing sciences. The ratio of single-authored articles by females was also improved over the study period. Females appeared to have a citation advantage, using Field Citation Ratio, over males in a few FoRs including mathematical sciences, chemical sciences, technology, built environment and design, studies in human society, law and legal studies, and studies in creative arts and writing. The average FCR for female first authored articles was greater than the average FCR for male first authored articles, including in a few fields such mathematical sciences where male authors outperformed females in terms of the number of articles.Item type:Publication, A Retrospective of Women Entrepreneurship Research and Future Research Directions(2024) ;Iqbal, S. ;Farrukh, M.Bhaumik, A.Entrepreneurship, and especially the involvement of women, is crucial to the advancement of the economy and society as a whole. The study’s objectives are to guide future research, educate policymakers and serve as a resource for researchers interested in furthering the study of women’s entrepreneurship and its societal implications. © 2024 MDI.Item type:Publication, Male homophily in South American herpetology: one of the major processes underlying the gender gap in publications Open PDF(2021) ;Grosso, J. ;Fratani, J. ;Fontanarrosa, G. ;Chuliver, M.Duport-Bru, A.S.The growing number of gender studies encourages more refined analyzes and greater conceptualization of the underlying processes of gender gap in science. In Herpetology, previous studies have described gender disparities and a scrutiny of individual interactions may help revealing the mechanisms modelling the global pattern. In this contribution we modeled a co-authorship network, a previously unexplored methodology for gender studies in this discipline, in addition to a broad and classic bibliometric analysis of the discipline. Co-authorship networks were modelled for two South American journals, because this geo-political location is considered to present the best gender balance within general scientific communities. However, we found a pattern of male preferential connections (male homophily) that marginalizes women and maintains the gender gap, at both regional and global scales. This interpretation arises from results coming from multiple analyses, such as high homophily index in collaboration networks, lower female representation in articles than expected in a non-gender biased environment, the decrease of female co-authors when the article leader is a man, and the extreme masculinization of the editorial boards. The homophilic dynamics of the publication process reveals that academic activity is pervasive to unbalanced power relationships. Personal interactions shape the collective experience, tracing back to the Feminist Theory's axiom: "the personal is political". © 2021.Item type:Publication, Profiles of monograph authors in the social sciences and humanities: an analysis of productivity, career stage, co-authorship, disciplinary affiliation and gender, based on a regional bibliographic database Open PDF(2017) ;Verleysen, F.T.Ossenblok, T.L.B.Scholarly monograph authors are compared to other authors, based on bibliographic data registered in the VABB-SHW database from Flanders (Belgium). Monograph authors are found to be most often established male researchers with high productivity, who are relatively less involved in research collaboration (co-authored publications) than are other authors. There exists a clear divergence between most of the individual social science disciplines, where monograph authors make up a marginal share of all authors, and several humanities disciplines where shares are up to one fifth. Relatively more female and non-established authors publish monographs in the humanities compared to the social sciences. A statistical comparison of productivity points to diverging publication patterns in Flemish SSH research: the group of most productive authors counts both monograph authors who also rely on other book publication types, and other authors who publish mostly journal articles. © 2017, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.Item type:Publication, A machine learning approach to quantify gender bias in collaboration practices of mathematicians Open PDF(2023) ;Steinfeldt, CMihaljevic, HCollaboration practices have been shown to be crucial determinants of scientific careers. We examine the effect of gender on coauthorship-based collaboration in mathematics, a discipline in which women continue to be underrepresented, especially in higher academic positions. We focus on two key aspects of scientific collaboration-the number of different coauthors and the number of single authorships. A higher number of coauthors has a positive effect on, e.g., the number of citations and productivity, while single authorships, for example, serve as evidence of scientific maturity and help to send a clear signal of one's proficiency to the community. Using machine learning-based methods, we show that collaboration networks of female mathematicians are slightly larger than those of their male colleagues when potential confounders such as seniority or total number of publications are controlled, while they author significantly fewer papers on their own. This confirms previous descriptive explorations and provides more precise models for the role of gender in collaboration in mathematics.Item type:Publication, Scientometric Analysis of Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Gender Trends in 30 Years of IEEE VIS Publications Open PDF(2022) ;Sarvghad, A. ;Franqui-Nadal, R. ;Reznik-Zellen, R. ;Chawla, R.Mahyar, N.We present the results of a scientometric analysis of 30 years of IEEE VIS publications between 1990-2020, in which we conducted a multifaceted analysis of interdisciplinary collaboration and gender composition among authors. To this end, we curated BiblioVIS, a bibliometric dataset that contains rich metadata about IEEE VIS publications, including 3032 papers and 6113 authors. One of the main factors differentiating BiblioVIS from similar datasets is the authors' gender and discipline data, which we inferred through iterative rounds of computational and manual processes. Our analysis shows that, by and large, inter-institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration has been steadily growing over the past 30 years. However, interdisciplinary research was mainly between a few fields, including Computer Science, Engineering and Technology, and Medicine and Health disciplines. Our analysis of gender shows steady growth in women's authorship. Despite this growth, the gender distribution is still highly skewed, with men dominating (~75%) of this space. Our predictive analysis of gender balance shows that if the current trends continue, gender parity in the visualization field will not be reached before the third quarter of the century (~2070). Our primary goal in this work is to call the visualization community's attention to the critical topics of collaboration, diversity, and gender. Our research offers critical insights through the lens of diversity and gender to help accelerate progress towards a more diverse and representative research community. IEEE
