Item type:Publication, Scientific Performance Assessments Through a Gender Lens: a Case Study on Evaluation and Selection Practices in Academia(2018)Nielsen, Matthias WullumThe focus on excellence and quality assurance in the academy has spawned a significant increase in the use of bibliometric measures in performance assessments of individual researchers. This article investigates the organizational consequences of this development through a gender lens. Based on a qualitative case study of evaluation and selection practices at a Danish university, a number of potential gender biases related to the use of bibliometric performance measures are identified. By taking as default the research preferences, approaches and career paths of a succesful group of predominantly male scholars, evaluators using bibliometrics risk disadvantaging candidates diverging from the norm with implications for gender stratification. Despite these potential biases, bibliometric measures come to function as technologies supporting a managerial narrative of the gender-blind organization. They adhere to the prevailing ethos of the academic meritocracy by standardizing the criteria for organizational advancement and ensuring transparency and accountability in the selection process. While bibliometric tools in this sense may lead to the recruitment of scientists with a strong CV and track record, they may at the same time prevent many talented researchers diverging from the norm from being recognized and succeed as academics.Item type:Publication, Bibliometric analysis of the situation of female researchers in the fields of social sciences and law in Spain Open PDF(2011) ;Torres-Salinas, D. ;Muñoz-Muñoz, A.M.Jiménez-Contreras, E.This paper presents a bibliometric study analyzing the productivity and citations of female researchers in the fields of social sciences and law in Spain, within the context of Spanish scientific journals. The study was based on the rankings of researchers included in the Índice de Impacto de las Revistas Españolas de Ciencias Sociales (INRECS) and Índice de Impacto de las Revistas Españolas de Ciencias Jurídicas (INRECJ). Eleven different scientific disciplines were analyzed and the final sample consisted of 3,370 researchers, of whom 30 % were women. To study gender differences four variables were selected and analyzed: number of papers, number of citations, number of international citations and citation average. The results show that women in the 11 areas studied have both a lower productivity and a lower number of citations. On the other hand, in some areas women do receive a greater number of international citations and in almost all areas achieve higher citation averages. However the presence of women in the rankings and among the Spanish research elite is still small.Item type:Publication, Gender and bibliometrics: A review(De Gruyter Saur, 2020)Dehdarirad, T.This study provides a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the main bibliometric indicators in relation to gender and the underlying factors which have an effect on the research productivity and impact of female and male scholars. The main indicators studied in the literature were the number of publications, the number of citations, self-citations, Journal Impact Factor, h-Index, authorship positions, and collaboration patterns. The literature on the visibility of scholars from the point of social media metrics has also been appraised. Underlying factors have a complex and inconclusive impact on productivity. The literature was divided into two groups, based on personal and structural factors. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston. The nature of the research, affected more and more by the pressure to publish, and by the acceleration of publication times, is increasingly affected by the appearance of phenomena such as those of the predatory Publisher, and the tensions between the large publishing corporations and open access platforms. © 2018 ACM
