Item type:Publication, Beliefs, practices, and awareness of written corrective feedback among EFL teachers: a mixed-methods study Open PDF(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2025-12-19) ;Mostafavi, Marzieh ;Shokrpour, NasrinAfraz, ShahramBackground Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) is a critical yet complex aspect of second language writing pedagogy. While teachers’ beliefs and practices regarding WCF have been studied, inconsistencies often exist, and the Iranian university context remains underexplored. This study is grounded in Sociocultural Theory (SCT) and Teacher Cognition, framing WCF not just as a pedagogical technique but as a socially mediated activity shaped by teachers’ beliefs and contextual constraints. The present study aimed to investigate the beliefs, practices, and awareness of WCF among Iranian EFL university teachers. Methods A mixed-methods design was employed in two phases. In the first phase, 100 teachers provided 1500 corrected student assignments and completed a questionnaire on their WCF beliefs and self-reported practices. The feedback was analyzed for strategy (direct/indirect, comprehensive/selective), focus, and potential gender bias. In the second phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 teachers to explore their awareness and knowledge, with the data analyzed using MAXQDA to develop a thematic model. Results The analysis revealed a predominant use of direct (71%) and selective (84%) feedback strategies, with a primary focus on form and organization. No significant gender bias was detected. While teachers demonstrated a strong belief in the utility of WCF, some discrepancies were observed between their stated beliefs and actual practices, particularly concerning comprehensive feedback and the use of error codes. Interview data, however, indicated a high level of practical awareness, conceptualized here as a form of mediated agency within their sociocultural context, leading to the development of a model of teacher WCF awareness and practice. Conclusion Iranian EFL teachers employ varied but principled WCF strategies, showing good awareness despite some belief-practice misalignments. The findings underscore the role of experiential knowledge as a key mediator in teacher cognition and highlight implications for teacher training to bridge the theoretical knowledge and practical application.Item type:Publication, Exploring gender disparities in academic orthopaedic surgery faculty: analyzing subspecialty and leadership diversity to foster inclusivity Open PDF(Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2025-07-11) ;Anand, Malini ;Julian, Kaitlyn R. ;Mulcahey, Mary K.Wong, Stephanie E.Background The historic gap in gender diversity within orthopaedic surgery is widely acknowledged and continues to persist. The lack of female representation in orthopaedic surgery has been attributed to a variety of factors, including the absence of female mentors and leaders within the field. As such, we sought to examine the gender diversity among orthopaedic surgery faculty in various subspecialties at academic institutions and the distribution of female faculty in positions of leadership. Methods The American Medical Association Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA) was used to identify all allopathic orthopaedic surgery residency programs during the 2022 to 2023 academic year. The total number of faculty, and distribution of female faculty by subspecialty were collected from January to March 2023. The mean and percentage of female faculty in each subspecialty per program was calculated. Results The total number of orthopaedic surgery female faculty identified was 524. The subspecialty with the highest percentage of female faculty per program was pediatrics at 26.1% (148/511). Hand (18.6%; 113/511), oncology (19.2%; 38/511), foot and ankle (13.6%; 49/511), spine (3.9%; 21/511), shoulder and elbow (7.4%; 7/511) and adult reconstruction (3.7%; 24/511) had lower percentages of female faculty per program. A total of 52 (10.2%) female section chiefs were identified across all programs. Oncology had the highest percentage of female faculty represented in section leadership at 18.4% (7) and sports medicine had the lowest at 4.8% (4). Conclusion Gender diversity of faculty in orthopaedic surgery is low with adult reconstruction (3.7%), spine (3.9%), and shoulder and elbow (7.4%) having the lowest percentages of female faculty. The percentage of female faculty represented in section leadership is also lacking with a total of 52 (10.2%) female section chiefs identified across all programs. Increasing the number of females in leadership positions across all orthopaedic subspecialties may be one step in helping improve gender diversity in the field.Item type:Publication, Reducing STEM gender bias with VIDS (video interventions for diversity in STEM). In response, the scientific community has called for methods to reduce bias, but few validated interventions exist. Thus, an interdisciplinary group of researchers and filmmakers partnered to create VIDS (Video Interventions for Diversity in STEM), which are short videos that expose participants to empirical findings from published gender bias research in 1 of 3 conditions. One condition illustrated findings using narratives (compelling stories), and the second condition presented the same results using expert interviews (straightforward facts). A hybrid condition included both narrative and expert interview videos. Results of two experiments revealed that relative to controls, VIDS successfully reduced gender bias and increased awareness of gender bias, positive attitudes toward women in STEM, anger, empathy, and intentions to engage in behaviors that promote gender parity in STEM. The narratives were particularly impactful for emotions, while the expert interviews most strongly impacted awareness and attitudes. The hybrid condition reflected the strengths of both the narratives and expert interviews (though effects were sometimes slightly weaker than the other conditions). VIDS produced substantial immediate effects among both men and women in the general population and STEM faculty, and effects largely persisted at follow-up. Several studies indicate that neurology is one of the most underrepresented specialties with female physicians as first authors, but also has one of the highest gender payment gaps. Neglecting the role of women in academic leadership positions hinders the visibility and recognition of research and leadership in multiple sclerosis (MS). Increasing diversity within academia has positive effects, such as widening focus and expanding the plurality of research outputs. The gender gap and visibility of female MS clinicians and researchers remains an unexplored research topic in our country despite the rising number of female neurologists. Objective: This study aims to establish the gender distribution between researchers and clinical neurologists in multiple sclerosis in Colombia and raise awareness about gender disparities in this area. Methods: We applied a cross-sectional survey study of Colombian neurologists and neurology residents currently members of the Colombian Neurology Association. Mean and standard deviation (SD) were used for quantitative variables and frequency for qualitative variables. To evaluate the influence of gender, logarithmic regression was used. Data were analyzed in SPSS 26. Results: A total of 201 participants agreed to complete the survey, most of whom were female (n = 135, 67.2%). All the Colombian regions were represented in the survey. Of those surveyed, 31.5% (n = 64) had an interest in demyelinating diseases and MS, of which 46.8% (n = 30) were female. Of the women with MS training, only 50% (n =5) had more than three publications as the first author of a scientific article compared to men (n = 5, 83%). After adjusting the number of publications by gender, there were no significant differences between men and women (median 2.0[2, 1.21] vs. 2[2, 0.5], p = 0.904). However, only 16.6% (n = 5) of women had a visible academic, leadership, or teaching position compared with men 75.7% (n = 25). When adjusting the salary income by gender, we found a statistically significant difference between women and men (median 2.0 [5, 1.47] vs. 3 [5, 1.65], p = 0.006). Women in MS earned between USD 2,500 and 3,800 per month; while men earned between USD 3,800 to 5,070. Conclusion: Despite a higher number of female neurologists trained in MS in Colombia, our data suggest considerable differences and gender gaps with regard to diverse opportunities at the academic, salary promotion, leadership, teaching, and recognition levels between male and female MS neurologists.
