    The Gender Gap in Brazilian Entomology: an Analysis of the Academic Scenario Open PDF

    Although women are about half of world’s population, they are underrepresented in many sectors including academia and the research scenario in general. Gender gap in Entomology has been pointed out in other publications; however, data for Brazil has never been demonstrated. Here we provide a diagnosis for the Brazilian Entomology scenario in order to contribute to propositions towards disentangling the gender gap in general. We analyzed scientometric data for Brazilian Entomology focusing on gender disparity and on personal perceptions related to the gender gap through an online questionnaire. We detected a pervasive gender bias in which the scissor-shaped curve is the most representative effect of it: women were the majority in lower degree stages but the minority in higher degree stages (permanent positions and positions of prestige and power). We also observed mentorship bias and discussed these results in light of intersectionality and the COVID-19 pandemic. Gender differences were perceived differently by the questionnaire respondents considering age, gender, and parenting. With this data and analyses, we have provided elements to stimulate and support change to a healthier and more equitable academic space. © 2021, The Author(s).

    Male principal investigators (almost) don't publish with women in ecology and zoology. Open PDF

    Representation of women in science drops substantially at each career stage, from early student to senior investigator. Disparities in opportunities for women to contribute to research metrics, such as distinguished speaker events and authorship, have been reported in many fields in the U.S.A. and Europe. However, whether female representation in scientific contributions differs in other regions, such as Latin America, is not well understood. In this study, in order to determine whether female authorship is influenced by gender or institutional location of the last (senior) author or by subfield within ecology, we gathered author information from 6849 articles in ten ecological and zoological journals that publish research articles either in or out of Latin America. We found that female authorship has risen marginally since 2002 (27 to 31%), and varies among Latin American countries, but not between Latin America and other regions. Last author gender predicted female co-authorship across all journals and regions, as research groups led by women published with over 60% female co-authors whereas those led by men published with less than 20% female co-authors. Our findings suggest that implicit biases and stereotype threats that women face in male-led laboratories could be sources of female withdrawal and leaky pipelines in ecology and zoology. Accordingly, we encourage every PI to self-evaluate their lifetime percentage of female co-authors. Female role models and cultural shifts-especially by male senior authors-are crucial for female retention and unbiased participation in science.

    DESIDOC journal of library and information technology: A gender perspective Open PDF

    The present study aims to study the research articles published in DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology during 2008-2017 with a gender perspective. Influence of gender was assessed at individual and collaborative levels, professional engagement and citedness. The findings reveal increase in the overall presentation of male authors i.e. 401 (75.38 %) compared to female authors 131 (24.62 %) of total of 532 authors. 345 (64.85 %) are multiple authored articles compared to 187 (35.15 %) single authored papers. Collaborative pattern of male-male authors with 205 (38.83 %) articles, followed by articles contributed by male solo authors with 160 (30.08 %) authors, outnumbers all other collaborative authorship patterns. A chi square value of (x 2 = 11.801, p = 0.003) shows significant difference in the number of contributions by both male and female authors engaged in different LIS profession. The findings prove that men are over represented in the whole LIS community. © 2018, DESIDOC.

    Race and gender bias in the research community on African lions Open PDF

    We used bibliometric data to show that Black, African, and women researchers are underrepresented among authors of field studies on lions (Panthera leo) in Africa. This may lead to biased representation in institutions dealing with lion research and conservation and reinforce disenfranchisement with one of the most emblematic species in Africa.
