Item type:Publication, Nursing students’ perceptions of gender and race in AI healthcare imagery Open PDF(SAGE Publications, 2025-12-02)Molu, BirselBackground The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare has transformed how health professionals learn, communicate, and make clinical decisions. However, AI-generated images and digital outputs often reproduce societal stereotypes, particularly regarding gender and race. Aim This study examined how nursing students’ perceptions of gender, race, and professional roles are shaped by AI-generated images of healthcare professionals, and how these perceptions influence their communication styles and ethical awareness in interactions with AI. Design A multimethod, cross-sectional design integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches was used. Quantitative data assessed gender attitudes in the nursing profession, while qualitative data explored visual interpretations and language patterns in AI interactions. Participant Population The sample included 132 second- and fourth-year nursing students from a health sciences faculty in Türkiye. Ethical Consideration The study was approved by the institutional ethics committee. Findings Results indicated that nursing students largely relied on visual cues particularly clothing and posture when identifying professional roles in AI-generated images. Despite claiming objectivity, students frequently associated doctors with men and nurses with women, reflecting persistent gender schemas. Female participants demonstrated greater sensitivity to both gender and racial imbalances, whereas males perceived AI-generated visuals as more neutral. Language analysis revealed two main communication styles in chatbot interactions: polite and direct. Quantitative findings showed that being female, having lower income, and higher GPA were associated with more egalitarian attitudes. Conclusion Nursing students’ perceptions and interactions with AI are influenced by implicit gender and racial stereotypes embedded in visual and linguistic representations. Integrating AI ethics, gender equity, and digital literacy into nursing curricula will foster critical awareness, algorithmic fairness, and equitable professional identity formation among future nurses.Item type:Publication, Nursing Research on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—A Bibliometric Analysis Open PDF(Wiley, 2025-04-07) ;Holmberg, ChristopherAhlstrom, LindaABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study is to map nursing publications on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Web of Science, highlighting trends, key contributors, and central research themes to identify potential areas for future research. Background The globally‐spanning 2030 Agenda promotes sustainable development using research technology and scientific innovation. However, research data availability is a challenge. By conducting big data analyses, using all available nursing research literature indexed in the Web of Science database (Core Collection) pertaining to this field, aid in understanding and advancing this area. Methods This study adopts a cross‐sectional descriptive bibliometric study design. Results The search yielded 131 publications, comprising 116 articles (89%) and 15 review articles (11%). This can be compared to adjacent disciplines such as Internal General Medicine ( n = 360), Nutrition/Dietetics ( n = 171), and Paediatrics ( n = 152). The leading countries in publication output were the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Among the included publications, only eight SDGs were addressed: SDG3 (Good Health and Well‐Being), SDG13 (Climate Action), SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG5 (Gender Equality), SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), SDG1 (No Poverty), and SDG9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). Conclusions The findings indicate a scarcity of articles in nursing publications focusing on the SDGs, suggesting insufficient evidence of nursing's contributions to these goals—particularly beyond SDG3. Implications This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric review and analysis of existing nursing publications on the SDGs. The results offer valuable insights for future research areas related to the SDGs, particularly for nursing scholars, clinicians, managers, and policymakers concerned with the underrepresentation of nursing publications. To address this gap and advance both the SDGs and quality patient care, action plans should be developed to integrate the SDGs into daily nursing practice. No Patient or Public Contribution. Occupational stigma in nursing can contribute to decreased motivation, limited job satisfaction, and hindered professional growth, potentially impacting students' career choices and commitment to the profession. AIM: This research explores how self-efficacy can mitigate the effects of occupational stigma among nursing students and promote gender equity by encouraging both male and female students to pursue nursing confidently and with a sense of professional pride. METHOD: This study utilized a cross-sectional descriptive research design on 560 nursing students, which was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, XXX University, XXX. Three validated instruments were used: The Nurse Occupational Stigma Scale, The Gender Equity Scale in Nursing Education, and The Student Self-Efficacy Scale. Multiple linear regression was conducted to identify predictors of occupational stigma and gender equity, with AMOS software used for mediation analysis. FINDINGS: Gender equity was negatively correlated with nurse occupational stigma (r = -0.124, p = 0.003), a positive correlation was found between gender equity and student self-efficacy (r = 0.098, p = 0.020), and nurse occupational stigma had a strong positive correlation with student self-efficacy (r = 0.345, p < 0.001). The structural equation model (SEM) suggests that self-efficacy contributes directly to perceptions of occupational stigma without mediation by gender equity. Significant predictors of gender equity included age (p < 0.001) and gender, with females reporting lower gender equity (p < 0.001), income level (p = 0.029), academic level (third level, p < 0.001), and self-efficacy (p = 0.002). For nurse occupational stigma, predictors included age (p = 0.023), income (p = 0.002), academic level (p < 0.001), and self-efficacy (p < 0.001). RECOMMENDATION: The findings of this study highlight the importance of fostering inclusive and equitable environments in nursing education and practice settings. This leads to the reproduction of inequality that is legitimized in interpersonal relationships and institutional dynamics. AIM: Describe how nursing students perceive and experience everyday sexism in the classroom at various universities in Catalonia. METHODS: Multicenter study using quantitative and qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews. The study population comprised fourth-year nursing students in Catalonia. The interviews were conducted online from February to June 2022. An ad hoc interview script was designed based on the scientific literature on the perception of sexism and discrimination in the classroom. The anonymity and confidentiality of participants and data were ensured. RESULTS: Twenty fourth-year nursing students participated, 18 women and two men, ages 21 to 49. Use of the space was unequal: men occupy the back rows of the classroom, forming male-only groups. Moreover, men participate more often in large groups when a debate is established, and they do so impulsively. Women are more respectful and ask questions about class content. Male students tend to do less work in group projects but present more. Female students lead the group work, especially in terms of coordination and organization, and take responsibility for the more complex parts. However, they participate less in oral presentations. CONCLUSION: In the nursing classroom, women are invisibilized and limited in their use of space. They also take on excess work but participate less. Men participate more, reject inclusive language, and work together to claim their space. These dynamics create the conditions for a nursing degree education steeped in legitimized everyday sexism.Item type:Publication, The workplace culture, mental health and wellbeing of early- and mid-career health academics: a cross-sectional analysis Open PDF(2024) ;Marck, Claudia H. ;Ayton, Darshini ;Steward, Trevor ;Koay, Hui-FernWiley, Joshua F.There are reports of poor working conditions for early and mid-career academics (EMCAs) in universities, however, empirical data using validated tools are scarce. We conducted an online, cross-sectional survey using validated tools to assess workplace satisfaction, exposure to workplace abuse, and mental health. Participants included employees of medical and health faculties of two of the largest Australian universities, surveyed between October 2020 and January 2021.Overall, 284 participants responded. Many reported job insecurity: half (50.7%) working on contracts with less than one remaining year. Workloads were considerable, with 89.5% of participants working overtime and 54.8% reporting burnout. Workplace abuse in the forms of bullying (46.6%), sexual harassment (25.3%), sexism (49.8%) and racism (22.5%) were commonly reported. Clinically significant symptoms of depression (28.0%), anxiety (21.7%) and suicidal ideation or self-harm (13.6%) were reported; with a higher prevalence among those working more overtime, and those exposed to workplace abuse. Priorities include providing a stable and safe workplace, increasing accountability and transparency in addressing workplace abuse, and supporting professional development.In summary, EMCAs in our study were commonly exposed to precarious employment conditions and workplace abuse. Our findings provide empirical evidence on where universities and funding bodies should direct resources and change organisational risk factors, to improve workplace culture.Item type:Publication, Prevalence of female authors in case reports published in the medical literature Open PDF(2019) ;Hsiehchen, D. ;Hsieh, A.Espinoza, M.IMPORTANCE Underrepresentation of female authors in research publications is prevalent, but it is unclear whether this is attributable to sex disparities in research conduct or authorship practices. Case reports are a poorly understood component of the biomedical corpus, and the production of anecdotal observations is not confounded by factors associated with disparities in female representation in research publications. Whether female authorship disparities exist in nonresearch publications of clinical information is unknown. OBJECTIVES To examine the authorship of case reports and elucidate factors associated with sex disparity. DESIGN AND SETTING Cross-sectional study of all case reports published by US authors in 2014 and 2015 indexed in PubMed performed from July 2015 to July 2018. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome measure was the proportion of female first authors. The secondary outcome measures were the proportion of female last authors and female authorship representation among different clinical specialties. RESULTS Bibliometric data was abstracted from 20 427 case reports published across 2538 journals. A total of 7252 (36%) and 4825 (25%) case reports had a female first and last author, respectively. In comparison, 44%and 34%of US trainees and physicians, respectively, were female in 2015. Among adult case reports, female authorship was more prevalent in academic environments compared with community settings (34.0%vs 28.2%for female first authors and 23.4%vs 19.7% for female last authors). Across states, the proportions of female first authors and last authors were universally less than the proportions of female trainees and active female physicians, respectively. Female first authorship was associated with larger author teams (odds ratio [OR], 1.02; 95%CI, 1.01-1.03), an academic affiliation (OR, 1.16; 95%CI, 1.06-1.27), and a female last author (OR, 1.58; 95%CI, 1.47-1.70). Relative to general internal medicine, specialties dominated by male clinicians were less frequently associated with female first authors. Several exceptions displaying a relatively equivalent tendency for male and female first authorship included oncology (OR, 0.97; 95%CI, 0.81-1.16), ophthalmology (OR, 0.87; 95%CI, 0.72-1.05), and radiation oncology (OR, 0.94 95%CI, 0.56-1.56). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The underrepresentation of women among first and last authors in publications of case reports underscores the pervasiveness of sex disparities in medicine. Collaboration and female mentors may be critical instruments in upsetting longstanding practices associated with sex bias. Not all clinical specialties were associated with lower-than-expected female authorship, and further exploration of specialty-specific norms in publication and mentorship may elucidate specific barriers to female authorship. © 2019 JAMA Network Open.All right reserved.Item type:Publication, Identifying Trends in the Most Cited Nursing Articles: Research Topics, Author Gender Representation and Characteristics Correlated With Citation Counts Open PDF(2024)Holmberg, ChristopherAIM: To assess the top 1000 cited nursing articles in terms of their impact, conceptual and social characteristics. DESIGN: Bibliometric literature review design. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis on the 1000 most cited nursing articles in English, focusing on assessing their impact and prevalent terms, keywords, co-occurrence networks and topic trends. Non-parametric statistical tests were used. DATA SOURCES: Web of Science Core Collection (accessed 14 February 2024). RESULTS: The 1000 most cited articles were exported from 201,310 eligible articles. The most cited articles received a total of 319,643 citations. The Journal of Advanced Nursing and the International Journal of Nursing Studies were the most cited journals. Literature reviews accounted for 21% of the most cited articles, compared to only 7% of all eligible articles. Most first authors were female, 63%. The data showed an increase in female first authorship among the most cited articles over time. This may reflect a shift towards greater gender equity in nursing research. Shorter article titles and fewer article pages were associated with more citations. CONCLUSION: Methodological and conceptual articles received the most citations, likely due to their broad applicability (e.g., across disciplines) and enduring relevance. There was a statistically significant correlation between article brevity and citation count, but the relationship should be viewed with caution given the small effect size. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: Bibliometrics is important for evidence-based practice because it helps nurses evaluate journals, articles and research topics. Since citation counts do not always indicate research quality, nurses and nursing students would benefit from training in bibliometrics to enhance their critical thinking in this area. IMPACT: Top-cited nursing articles indicate influential research topics and methods. They also influence authors' academic career opportunities, allowing assessment of research equity in terms of dominant countries and author gender representation. The experiences of male students and nurses in educational and clinical settings are documented, but no research explored the experiences of nurse educators. PURPOSE: To explore and develop a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of male nurse educators. METHODS: An interpretive phenomenological inquiry was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 male educators in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ricoeur's interpretation theory was used for data analysis. FINDINGS: The themes included "searching for respect and autonomy: from discrimination to recognition", "keeping up the pace: proving worth as nurse educators", "building relationship with the opposite gender: overcoming cultural constraints", "withstanding unfair female nursing and non-nursing management", "appreciating support from democratic management" and "envisioning a non-gendered nursing profession". CONCLUSION: Male educators surmounted various challenges while searching for respect and recognition and felt content with their professional growth. The greatest challenge was discriminative institutional and the government policies. The educators recognized that female dominance in nursing can be a hurdle, but they indicated that gender discrimination can be ended with collaborative efforts at personal, institutional, and governmental levels. Nursing regulatory bodies and institutions should develop policies that are conducive to recruitment of male and female educators. Separate sub-divisions could be established to provide support to and advocate for the rights of male nurses in clinical, educational, and leadership positions.Item type:Publication, Is there gender bias in nursing research? Open PDF(2008) ;Polit, D.F.Beck, C.T.Using data from a consecutive sample of 259 studies published in four leading nursing research journals in 2005-2006, we examined whether nurse researchers favor females as study participants. On average, 75.3% of study participants were female, and 38% of studies had all-female samples. The bias favoring female participants was statistically significant and persistent. The bias was observed regardless of funding source, methodological features, and other participant and researcher characteristics, with one exception: studies that had male investigators had more sex-balanced samples. To examine the state of gender equality in nursing research by analyzing the representation of male and female as editors and as authors of articles published in scientific journals. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out between September-2019 and May-2020. All the scientific publications published in 115 nursing journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports in the years 2008, 2013, and 2017 were chosen as analysis units. The main variables studied were gender of the “journal editor”; gender of the “first author”, “last author”, “corresponding author”, and “first author in funded articles”. Descriptive and inferential analysis was performed. Results: The proportion of male editors in 2008, 2013, and 2017 was 23.3, 19, and 18.5% respectively, with a male/female ratio of 1:3, 1:4 and 1:5. Male editors are mainly found in the journals of the first quartile (Q1 = 33.8%, ratio1:2), compared to the journals of the fourth quartile (Q4 = 6.6%, ratio1:14), p < 0.01. The male authorship position was “last author” (30.9%, ratio1:2), “corresponding author” (23.3%, ratio 1:3), “first author” (22.1%, ratio 1:4) and “first author in funded articles” (21.8%, ratio 1:4). Furthermore, in 19.5%, of the articles there were more male authors. The percentage of articles with male authorship increased from 2008 to 2017, “first author” (21.1–23.4%; p < 0.01), “last author” (30.0–31.1%; p = 0.22), “corresponding author” (22.5–24.2; p = 0.01), and “first author in funded articles” (18.1–25.9%; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Men are over-represented in the editor role in the most prestigious nursing journals. There are a higher proportion of male authors in the main positions of authorship.
