Item type:Publication, Assessing gender balance among journal authors and editorial board members Open PDF(2013) ;Mauleón, E. ;Hillán, L. ;Moreno, L. ;Gómez, I.Bordons, M.The study of journal authorship and editorial board membership from a gender perspective is addressed in this paper following international recommendations about the need to obtain science and technology indicators by gender. Authorship informs us about active scientists who contribute to the production and dissemination of new knowledge through journal articles, while editorial board membership tells us about leading scientists who have obtained scientific recognition within the scientific community. This study analyses by gender the composition of the editorial boards of 131 high-quality Spanish journals in all fields of science, the presence of men and women as authors in a selection of 36 journals, and the evolution of these aspects from 1998 to 2009. Female presence is lower than male presence in authorship, editorial board membership and editorship. The presence of female authors is slightly lower than the presence of women in the Spanish Higher Education sector and doubles female presence in editorial boards, which mirrors female presence in the highest academic rank. The gender gap tends to diminish over the years in most areas, especially in authorship and very slightly in editorial board membership. Large editorial boards and having a female editor-in-chief are positively correlated with women presence in editorial boards. The situation of women in Spanish science is further assessed in an international context analysing a selection of international reference journals. The usefulness of journal-based indicators to monitor the situation of men and women in science and to assess the success of policies oriented to enhance gender equality in science is finally discussed. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.Item type:Publication, Exploring gender differences in patenting in Spain Open PDF(2014) ;Mauleón, E. ;Daraio, C.Bordons, M.The under-representation of women in science and technology is a matter of current great concern. Obtaining patent-based indicators by gender is crucial to analyse the situation of women in innovation, identify potential cases of gender inequalities, and support policy measures to promote gender balance. In this article we analyse men and women involvement in Spanish patents applied to the European Patent Office during 1990-2004. At least one female inventor is present in 18% of the patents; female contribution amounts to 9% of the total and 14% of inventors are women. Female involvement is above average in the academic public sector and in specific thematic areas, while the share of women in industry is very low. Female inventors show a stronger trend to collaborate than their male counterparts, as measured through their lower percentage of single-inventor patents and their higher co-inventorship index. Over the 15-year period under analysis, women's involvement in patenting activity shows an upward trend, especially at universities and in cross-gender teams and the specialization profile of women tends to expand. Main difficulties in the development of patent-based indicators by gender are pointed out and the relevance of indicators to monitor the situation of women in innovation activity is highlighted. © 2013 The Author.Item type:Publication, The effect of gender on research staff success in life sciences in the Spanish National Research Council Open PDF(2008) ;Mauleón, E. ;Bordons, M.Oppenheim, C.Inter-gender differences in research performance of Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) scientists in the area of biology and biomedicine are analysed by means of bibliometric indicators (SCI, 1996-2000). Productivity of both men and women increases with scientific category, and inter-gender differences are not found within each category. Women with intermediate levels of seniority (11-20 and 21-30 years of working life) show lower productivity than their male counterparts, a factor which might contribute to explaining the slower promotion observed for female scientists. However, women who entered CSIC in the last 10 years overtake men in productivity, so a more balanced distribution of women by scientific ranks would be expected in the future. The need to improve the normalisation of author names in publications and bibliographic databases and even to develop a 'digital author identifier' to make these studies easier is pointed out. © Beech Tree Publishing 2008.Item type:Publication, Women involvement in editorial boards of mathematics journals(2007) ;Mauleón, E.Bordons, M.Members of editorial boards of journals play an essential role in science, since they contribute to guarantee the quality and relevance of publications. This study analyses whether women are well represented in editorial boards as a sign of her participation in responsibility positions in science. Women's representation on the editorial board of eight international high quality mathematics journals is studied and compared to women's presence as authors of papers in the same journals. On average only 4% of the members of the editorial boards analysed were women, while 10% of the authors with publications were female scientists. Inter-gender differences in impact of publications were not found, but less collaboration was observed in female publications. This study shows that women are under-represented as authors in Mathematics journals but her presence is even lower in leadership positions such as members of journal editorial boards.Item type:Publication, Are there inter-gender differences in the presence of authors, collaboration patterns and impact? (RIP)(2013) ;Mauleón, E.Bordons, M.This paper analyses the presence of men and women as authors and editorial board members in a selection of international scientific journals from different fields and explore potential inter-gender differences in collaboration practices and impact of research. Female presence is lower than male presence in authorship and editorial board membership in all fields and the share of women in editorial boards is lower than as authors of articles. Our results suggest there are differences in the collaboration practices of scientists by gender, since the share of women in internationally co-authored articles is lower than expected in all fields -except in Clinical Medicine-. Although large intergender differences in citation rates are not observed, women are under-represented in highly cited articles in most of the fields.Item type:Publication, Inter-gender differences in technological activity: Male and female contribution to patents in the Spanish OEPM database(2009) ;Mauleón, E.Bordons, M.Women involvement in Spanish patent applications at the Spanish Patent Office during the period 1990-2005 is analysed. Female inventors were present in 16% of the patents, increasing their participation from 10% in 1990 to 19% in 2005. Women activity was higher than average in the academic public sector (universities and Spanish National Research Council) and in specific thematic areas (Human Necessities and Chemistry). Female patents showed higher collaboration than male ones, as measured through their lower percentage of single-inventor patents and their higher co-inventorship index. The higher increase in female involvement was observed in universities, followed by individual applicants, while the lowest growth corresponded to industry.Item type:Publication, Productivity, impact and publication habits by gender in the area of materials science Open PDF(2006) ;Mauleón, E.Bordons, M.A comparative analysis of the scientific performance of male and female scientists in the area of Materials Science at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) is presented. Publications of 333 scientists during 1996-2000 are downloaded from the international database Science Citation Index and the national one ICYT. Scientific performance of scientists is studied through different indicators of productivity (number of SCI and ICYT publications), international visibility (average impact factor of publications, percentage of documents in "top journals") and publication practices (%international publications, signing order of authors in the documents and different collaboration measures). Inter-gender differences in the research performance of scientists are studied. Influence of professional category and age are analysed. Although women are less productive than men, no significant differences in productivity are found within each professional category. However, a different life-cycle of productivity is found for men and woman and the most important inter-gender differences in productivity occur at the ages of 40-59.Item type:Publication, Male and female involvement in patenting activity in Spain Open PDF(2010) ;Mauleón, E.Bordons, M.The involvement of male and female scientists in the technological activity developed in Spain is analysed through the study of patent applications filed with the Spanish OEPM database during the period 1990-2005. Comparative analyses based on participation, contribution and inventors by gender are presented and discussed. The study reveals a low female involvement in technology, which tends to concentrate in specific institutional sectors (public research institutions) and technological sections (A/Human Necessities and C/Chemistry). Over the 16-year period analysed the involvement of female scientists rose at a higher rate than that of men in most of the institutional sectors and technological fields. The highest relative increase corresponds to University and Spanish National Research Council, and our data suggest that it is enhanced by collaboration. To make the production of sex-disaggregated technology indicators easier the inclusion of the sex of the inventors as an additional field in patent databases would be desirable, as well as a higher normalisation of inventor names, applicant names (full names) and institutional affiliations. © 2009 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.Item type:Publication, A new approach to funding acknowledgment field in the Spanish case: Can be used to identify gender gap in research funding?(International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, 2019) ;Mauleón, E.Bautista-Puig, N.Funding Acknowledgments (FA) in research publications is a way to express gratitude to the different entities who funded or contributed somehow to the research. However, there are few studies that address the issue of gender gap funding by using the field ‘Funding Acknowledgments’ (FA) on the Web of Science (WoS). Since their creation in 2007, they have provided funding for around 7,000 of the nearly 70,000 proposals for research projects submitted. With a success rate of about 11%, these Grants are highly competitive. Despite major advancement of women's participation in research activity, women overall remain the minority in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM disciplines). Against that backdrop, this article analyses men's and women's presence in ERC Grants. The gender balance in the ERC Grant, have been examined in three dimensions: Excellence Awarded; Scientific Leadership Position; and Time Series Evolution. The results show that female presence is lower than men as submitted (26% vs 74%), granted (22% vs 78%), expert panel members (28% vs 72%), and as a panel chair (26% vs 74%). State-space prediction of the future pattern of these grants shows that time has no clearly beneficial effect on women's participation as applicants, granted, expert panel members or panel chairs, particularly in the area of Physics and Engineering. © 2019 The Author(s).
