    A comparision of productivity of male and female scientists of CSIR Open PDF

    The paper examines the scientific productivity of male and female scientists working in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India at the overall agency level and at the group of laboratories level, characterized by three broad subjects of physical, biological, and engineering sciences. The productivity of scientists is evaluated on the basis of three parameters: the extent of scientists not publishing any paper, the average number of papers per scientist, and using Lotka's approach. In order to find out whether there is any significant difference between male and female productivity distributions, a Chi-square test is used. Studies the applicability of Lotka's inverse power law and some other statistical models in the distribution of scientific productivity of male and female scientists. Concludes that no significant difference exists between productivity distributions of male and female scientists.

    Scientometric profile of Indian scientific output in life sciences with a focus on the contributions of women scientists Open PDF

    Abstracts: An analysis of 9,957 papers published by Indian scientists and indexed by WoS in 12 sub-disciplines of life sciences during 2008-2009 indicates that academic institutions produced the highest number of papers. Of these, 340 (3.4 %) were contributed by female scientists exclusively and 4,671 (47 %) were written jointly by male and female scientists. Women scientists produced about 0.36 papers per author, while their male counter parts produced 0.50 papers per author. Significant number of women scientists was first author and about 23 % were corresponding authors in papers written jointly by both sexes. Women scientists emphasized on the sub-discipline of cell biology and reproductive biology and male scientists emphasized on the sub-discipline of zoology. Women scientists work in small teams and have very less international collaborative papers. Women scientists publish in low impact factor and domestic journals and also are cited less as compared to their male counter parts. © 2013 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

    Contributions by women faculties of physics from select institutions of Delhi: A scientometrics study Open PDF

    The present study aims to bring out the contribution of women faculty in the discipline of Physics in select institutions of Delhi. The study covers a total of 44 women faculties and their 802 publications during the period of 2011-2015 collected from various sources. The study presents a scientometrics analysis of 463 journal articles. The study focuses on authorship pattern, research interest areas, most productive authors, most used journals etc. The study indicates that multi-authored papers were dominated. Ratnamala Chatterjee from IIT Delhi found to be the most productive author and Journal of Applied Physics is the most preferred journal. CSIR-National Physical Laboratory was leading institution in publishing journal articles (145). It was noticed that majority of women authors preferred to be the second author while writing the paper jointly. © 2017, DESIDOC.

    Trends in gender of first and senior authors of articles published in JMIRO Open PDF

    Introduction: Despite progress of women in science and medicine, women remain underrepresented in academic publication. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential gender differences in women authorship in the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (JMIRO). Methods: Gender of the first and senior author of all articles published in JMIRO between 2012 and 2021 were examined. Changes over time and differences among groups were compared using the chi-square test. Results: In total, 1,138 articles were assessed. Women were first and senior authors on 34% and 25% of all articles respectively. The proportion of women as first author was 30%, 41% and 36% for medical imaging (MI), radiation oncology (RO) and combined MI/RO articles respectively. Similarly, the proportion of women as senior author was lower than men at 22%, 32% and 23% for MI, RO and MI/RO articles respectively. Women first authorship over the study period remained stable from 2014 (36%) to 2020 (38%); however, it decreased dramatically in 2021 to 28%. There was a trend of increasing women senior authorship from 2013 (15%) to 2017 (35%) but decreased to 23% in 2021. Conclusion: Over the past 10 years of publications, one in three first authors were women and only one in four senior authors were women. The acknowledgement of this imbalance is the first step to pave the way towards addressing underlying systemic issues related to academic publication and disparities in gender and other inequities. © 2022 The Authors.
